The Masks Artist - John Paul Fauves

John Paul Fauves (b. 1980) is a contemporary Costa Rican Artist who lives and works in San Jose. Heavily influenced by the Fauvist movement of the early 20th century - John Paul seeks to eternally question and challenge viewers. His themes deal with all aspects of the self: temptation, addiction, and redemption being prominent throughout his works.
John Paul formulated much of his technique and subject matter under the guidance of Joaquin Rodriguez Del Paso throughout the 90s and early 2000s - and then spent fifteen years developing his signature fusing of pop culture icons with sinister and ever-changing elements. "A Loss of Innocence" - a theme conceived in 2015 was introduced to the NYC art scene with a solo show with The TAX Collection. This series dealt with the innocence we observe in children (for John, this was his young son) and how we grapple with knowing they will inevitably lose this fragile worldview as they are exposed to the cruelty and beauty of the outside world.

Ever since I was a little kid, I have always struggled to see how I fit into this world. I struggled with being born into a structure that depends on people's willingness to change and fit in.
I always knew I wanted to do art, but I have faced many rejections as an artist since I was 15 years old and started to paint. Because of those rejections, I followed my family's expectations, studied business, got a master's degree, and got a desk job.
After working the rat race for a few years, I ended up falling heavily into drugs. It was some kind of a paradox because they became my freedom even though they almost killed me. I could also detach myself from the fear of what society was thinking of me through that suffering. I was at my worst period, and the judging didn't kill me as I thought it would.

When you lose it all and end up on the streets, you learn to not care about anything but do what's good for you and your family. What other people think stops mattering.

So I finally followed my dream and started making art for myself. I found the fauvist movement, where my name came from. The name essentially translates to the wild beast, and artists in the movement like Matisse were considered as a wild beast by the French oligarchy & art critics. Even their techniques were wild, sometimes painting straight from the tube and using their hands instead of brushes.

Starting to paint in this crazy way helped me avoid all my temptations.
Creating art turned into this visceral experience where I could channel my physical, spiritual, and mental energy. When judgment is gone, you feel the freedom to create. I started to paint wearing a mask so I could create without ego. I could detach myself from the idea that something has to be in a certain way so it will be lived.

The masks are a life project, I've been focused on masks for 18 years (since I started painting). It is also partly to show people that being connected to myself without caring how you look to others is rewarding. Finding your connection between mind and soul is above all else, and I try to signify that through my art.
You only have one breath in this lifetime and using it to become what you think others want you to become is a waste, in my opinion.

A Search For Calmness And Serenity - Jaq Belcher

Jaq Belcher explores ephemeral installations using the "seeds" (the excised pieces of paper) from work to compose intricate mandalas on the floor lasting only for the length of an exhibition. Belcher takes an individual, site-specific approach to each installation. Often the number of seeds on the floor will correlate directly to some feature of the site – square footage, acreage, age, or even real estate value. Often an unframed, large-scale work from whence the seeds was born will hang above the mandala on the floor. Repurposing these "scraps" is another way Belcher explores reincarnation and energy transfer in her work. Each installation is composed on site by Belcher herself, not by the exhibitor, according to a drawing or schematic she has devised in the studio.

Much of Jaq's work references numerology, cosmology, and other symbolic significances of our place in the universe. Deciphering these codes or understanding their meaning does not, however, detract from the stunningly visual experience her work evokes. Belcher uses an Exacto knife to hand-cut seeds from single sheets of paper to make stunningly beautiful patterns, creating voids, raising or folding the pieces to accentuate the design. These lifted or pushed surfaces to make for shadows that, in turn, can form subtle changes in the tonality of the white paper according to the time of day or light that is surrounding it.

Belcher's work draws the viewer in and elicits an initial reaction of awe and amazement at the technique behind the meticulous, labor-intensive process. Further pause evokes a more mesmerizing and meditative experience, allowing for quietude and a deeper consciousness to emerge.

Jaq Belcher is a New York based artist working with hand-cut paper. Born in Melbourne, Australia, Belcher received her Bachelor of Arts from Melbourne University, studied gold- and silversmithing at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, and received her Master of Arts Administration degree from the University of New South Wales College of Fine Arts.

Belcher explores energy, consciousness, light, and form through drawing on paper with a blade. She uses an X-acto knife and handmade stencils in the shape of the vesica piscis (sacred geometry) in minutely scaled sizes. She composes and creates fields and imagery – both figurative and abstract – on pristine sheets of archival white paper. The vesica piscis forms in the paper can be made of two, three, four, five, or six cuts.

They are either completely excised from the sheet or left attached by a corner or small arc and then raised to catch light and form shadow.
Each cut is accounted for, and the final count is noted at the base of each work alongside three dates: the date the underlying drawing was started, the date the last cut was made, and the date the work was completed.

Originally a trained sculptor while studying metalwork at Melbourne University, Belcher turned to paper as her preferred medium upon moving to New York as she prioritized simplicity in her practice. Her investigations into the paper are studies in matter manipulation. The blade ruptures the paper's surface, which holds the memory of this energy transfer in its completed state.

The resultant work is electric with this memory – radiant both as a whole and as a sum of its parts. Stillness and focus are the foremost tenets of her studio practice, of which calmness and serenity are the direct results.

ART MARKET MAGAZINE: Dear Lucio, It's a pleasure having an interview with you. We visited your Instagram profile and were very impressed by your unique style, from the idea formed and expressed in your art by high-level technique. Let's start from the beginning. What are your routs in art? Did you come from an artistic family? Did you drown into art by your surrounded family and friends during your childhood?

LÚCIO CARVALHO: My encounter with art was at a pretty late age. I grew up in an agricultural area, my family's farm, far from any urban center, and I didn't have much access to art. I grew up on a centenary farm that belonged to my maternal great-grandparents, a magical place surrounded by nature, animals, and many memories of the past. My cousins, my brother, and all the children on the farm loved to ride horses and play, except for me, I was only interested in drawing, coloring, and painting... It didn't take me long to realize that I'm different, that there's something else in me, not familiar with the place I was living in. I never witnessed other people in my life creating art or showing the same interest in art the same way as me, so I deduced that drawing should be prohibited or something that should be done privately. Since then, I started hiding to draw.

A. M.: Before we talk about your journey in the Art Field, establishing your name through art exhibitions worldwide, Let's discuss your current style, which is highly influenced by the Baroque and Rococo artistic styles. You combine Hyperrealism with a contemporary, modern, dreamy approach in your art, which is unique. Where did the idea come from? What led you to develop this artistic style made by this combination?

L. C.: Having deduced that I was a very different child from the others and due to my uncontrollable addiction to drawing, I started to hide under a huge dining table on the farm, protecting myself from bullying, curious and supposedly repressive looks. Positioned in front of that enormous table, I could see an old wooden china cabinet with cut glass. From hiding under that table, I could observe the crockery and china reflected in the mirrors at the back of the cabinets, a small universe around me. Below, I saw myself in their mirrors that reflected people, portraits, paintings, cups, and teapots mixed together in a magical and unique image. I realized that all those memories and objects stored in the cabinet were as fragile as the beveled glass that protected them.

A. M.: Which artists influenced your work?

L. C.: Many should be mentioned here:
-Nelson Leirner, for the compositions of children, religious, Brazilian, and banal elements that populate his works and my mind.
-Adriana Varejão, for her overflowing and exposed viscerality that so shock, repel, and fascinate me.
-Arthur Bispo do Rosário, for his misunderstood sanity and his logic in reorganizing his private universe.
-Jeff Koons, for his impeccable and dubious aesthetic sense, reminds me so much of my loving memories.
-Matthew Barney, I visited his exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo - Paris in 2002. My first contact with a contemporary artist outside Brazil profoundly transformed my way of thinking. -Caravaggio, For all its drama. His way of playing with light and shadow and its atmosphere hypnotizes me and reminds me of the nights on the farm before installing the electric light.

A. M.: How would you describe the idea behind your art? The shiny masks on the baroque feminine women with such a solid emotional approach... What are you trying to express?

L. C.: It is a symbiosis between people, their fragilities, and their porcelain protections. I created a direct dialogue with the objects around me, full of stories and fragile as the people who wore them. The figures and objects in my paintings came into the world to be shared but were kept there for several generations, so they don't risk being broken. Could it be that in this search for hypothetical protections, we would not be saying: listen to me, look at me here inside this dome, get me out of here, hug me, we can share and celebrate. So let's go out to the world without shields and fear of what comes to happen...

A. M.: Digging a bit through your previous artistic projects, we discovered sculptures, beautiful work mainly based on organic items, combined in golden or shiny skulls, or porcelain items combined with wood. How would you describe these different phases in your art until they reached your current style?

L. C.: "Averses" or "Inside out" is a series that at first seems disconnected from my current creation, as it causes strangeness and repulsion. Still, it also attracts us and instigates us to look inside. This series has precisely the exact origin in that farm of a matriarchal family where I grew up, and because there was no electricity, most women used to spend all their time cooking, so the food did not go wrong. Reflected in the mirrors between the porcelains, I watched the meats smoking amidst the white smoke above the wood-burning stove, almost like a magical ritual.

A. M.: Can you explain the workflow of your art? From the point of the idea to the complete outcome of your work? As I understand, you are usually based on photography, which is later on being painted manually by acrylic and oil color?

L. C.: In the current phase, I started based on research about the great masters of the renaissance, Baroque, Rococo... I took their magical and unreachable characters that fascinated me so much through the history books, transported them to my universe, and then protected them with my fragile porcelain helmets. Currently, I'm gradually detaching myself from these classic and literal paintings and getting closer to a more contemporary context, permanently attached to my affective memories that are the basis of all my work. In my atelier in Brazil, an incredibly lonely and necessary process for creating creation begins. First, this idea is expanded and painted in oil on canvas; with the help of my team. Then, as soon as we finished, we sent it to the art framing place to be appropriately tensioned, varnished, and framed.

A. M.: Tell us about the Guggenheim New York competition in 2010, where you have been selected as one of the winners.

L. C.: The prize proposed by GUGGENHEIM, in commemoration of its fiftieth anniversary, asked artists from all over the world to send them proposals for the occupation of its void. "Re:Contemplating the Void GUGGENHEIM - NY" The artwork I've sent was a photograph of a tower with shacks full of satellite dishes installed right in the center of the museum: If culture does not easily reach the less privileged classes, then let them invade and occupy the great cultural centers of the world and take it as theirs by right, exchanging cultures, assimilating and also being assimilated, thus transforming into new scenarios, new aesthetics, creating a new narrative about museums and their "invaders," thus mixing up what is reality and what is not.

A. M.: You are represented by "Chic Evolution in Art," a gallery based in Florida. Are you selling your original artworks or only limited editions? What is the price range of your art?

L. C.: I am currently selling Limited editions as well as Original Oil works on canvas. The Limited editions photographs are in the 8-12k price range, and Originals (Oil paintings) are between $35k and 60k.

A. M.: What's the future hold? Any upcoming exhibitions/ art fairs scheduled for 2021/2022?

L. C.: Right now, I am working on the most significant art piece of my career. It will be the most definitive piece I've created, and it will be unveiled at Art Basel Miami week next December via Chic Evolution in Art. So much focus and energy are being put into this piece and Basel week that we're not looking further into the future just yet.

An EXCLUSIVE interview with Wolfgang Stiller

German Artist Wolfgang Stiller, b. 1961, has exhibited his work at over a hundred solo and group exhibitions around the globe. He is best known for his series "Matchstickmen" monumental matchstick sculptures with tips that resemble life-sized, charred human heads, reflecting the impermanence of our human existence. The artistic practice of Stiller encompasses different expressive forms, especially sculpture and installation. His artworks reflect his poetic way of handling all kinds of materials, giving them a face and a changing identity. Stiller's works of art are presented in respectable international museum collections, including at the Wuhan Museum of Fine Art in China, Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern, and OsthausMuseum Hagen in Germany, and in Public collections of Land Hessen and Museum Bochum in Germany, among others. In addition, he was awarded multiple international awards for his artistic contribution. It is a great pleasure to feature an intimate, exclusive interview with such a fascinating artist.

ART MARKET MAGAZINE: It's a pleasure to interview you, Wolfgang; your work is awe-inspiring and unique. Personally, your art raises philosophical questions about humanity, way of living, death, and individual suffering. Can you share with us the background of your art creation? From where did you get the inspiration for the "matchstick heads," for example?

WOLFGANG STILLER: Thank you. It's a pleasure having this interview. I started the "matchstickmen" series in China when I was working for a movie production about a german guy called John Rabe who saved many Chinese people during the Japanese occupation of Nanjing. I was doing fifty dummies for the background. After that production, I had those head molds sitting on my studio shelves, and I was playing around with them. While working on the movie, I was doing some research regarding the Nanjing massacre. (The Nanjing Massacre or the Rape of Nanjing was an episode of mass murder and mass rape committed by Imperial Japanese troops against the residents of Nanjing (Nanking), at that time the capital of China, during the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937–1945).) Many people died back then by decapitation. The first heads I mounted on bamboo poles until the idea of a human matchstick was taking shape in my mind. While I was working on them, the original idea started to change and get richer. This always happens while I am working on a project. In the beginning, it is somehow a rough thought which gets refined over time. Initially, I thought about wasted human resources when I saw those migration workers all over the world who work like crazy in terrible conditions. Since I was living and working in China back then, I used only Chinese models. Using Chinese models didn't mean that this was a statement about China. People get exploited all over the planet, and no matter where we go, we will find similar situations. I try not to make personal political statements in my art. I don't want to use it as a propaganda tool. It's not the job of art. As an artist, one always needs sources of inspiration. So I try to be open by looking around and being inspired by what life has to offer.

ART MARKET MAGAZINE: You grew up in Germany, and during the early 80's you've studied communications design at the GHS Wuppertal, followed by art studies at the "Kunstakademie Düsseldorf" and working as a guest professor for NYU (New York University) in Shanghai, China. What important role did the years of studying communications design have and affected your success, impacted your development in the art field?

WOLFGANG STILLER: I started to study communication design right away after finishing college. At that point, I had no real idea where this would lead me to. I just enjoyed drawing and painting. This education would most likely lead to a job in an advertising agency, and I had no intention to go in this direction. At this point, there were no computers, and everything had to be done by hand, so I learned some skills and focused mainly on painting and drawing. I already renovated an old loft and had a lovely studio of my own. One day a friend of mine brought a professor from Kunstakademie Düsseldorf to my studio. They saw my "potential" and convinced me to study fine art at the academy, so I changed the direction. Learning communication design education didn't really help my career other than understanding that I wanted to work as an artist. I guess one could call that a strong impact.

ART MARKET MAGAZINE: Let's talk about your fascinating series, the "Matchstickmen," You have mentioned that these sculptures, the figures, are a metaphor for the impermanence of our human existence. What is your personal philosophy or concerns with life's relation to human transience?

WOLFGANG STILLER: First of all, it is a fact rather than a philosophy that this body's human existence has a due date. Thinking more deeply about this, I realized the fragility of our human life. We like to ignore the fact that we all have to die. It seems something which happens to others but not to ourselves. I want those matchstick men to be a friendly reminder that this life, this body of ours, is impermanent, and since we don't know how long our lifespan will be, we should try to make the most out of every moment. It is somehow scary not to know when our personal time is up – therefore, we should make the most out of it. Some people consider my work negative or dark, but I can't see it this way. I want to encourage people to reflect on life – how can that be negative? I actually don't consider my human figures specifically male. They represent human beings in general. There is also the theory that artists tend to create figures which relate to their own body shape. A skinny guy like Alberto Giacometti made quite skinny figures. If I were a female artist, I might use female figures. I am not trying to make any statement on gender. My figures just represent humans. That's it.

ART MARKET MAGAZINE: You have mentioned that many of your work and your artistic approach, in general, are strongly influenced by Buddhism from the time you have spent living in China, Still, In your well-known artwork, "The star of David" from 2013 (Star of David, 2013 Wood, polyurethane, paint. 98 2/5 × 98 2/5 × 17 7/10 in 250 × 250 × 45 cm ), we see a very Jewish Symbolic sculpture. With your family roots in Germany and the philosophical idea behind the "matchstick men" series, I assume there's a deeper meaning than only the visual. Will you please share with us the meaning of the sculpture?

WOLFGANG STILLER: This work belongs to a series called "Memorials." In my opinion, most memorials are too abstract to actually evoke memories or feelings regarding certain horrific events in history. The best example is the enormous Jewish memorial in Berlin. A bunch of concrete blocks that are supposed to represent the atrocities of the Holocaust. In reality, young kids sitting on these blocks hanging out with friends having a beer. That's not what I would consider a memorial.
I created works about the Nanjing Massacre, the Holocaust, the Christian crusades, the abuse of the Swastika. A memorial should really shake the viewer's heart to a certain degree; otherwise, I don't see the necessity for it. Regarding the "Star of David," I get very different reactions from Jewish people. One person who wrote an article about it was really touched, especially since it is made by a German artist. Others, like a curator, got really offensive and told me I would regret it for the rest of my life if I would ever show the work in Israel. He wasn't even interested in why I created the artwork. Art is about communication. There is nothing one can do if people are not really interested in a dialog. I was born in Germany twenty years after those horrible events. So I didn't witness any of this in person, but I find it essential to always ensure that we don't forget what human beings are capable of. I feel responsible for reminding people of this not as a German but as a human being in general.

ART MARKET MAGAZINE: Your sculptures are being created to reflect rough, strong emotions related to humanity' and individual position in our society. Where does this need come from? Did it come from your personal criticism about our culture and human behavior in history?

WOLFGANG STILLER: Every artist needs to have a reason to create a work. For some, it might be the color red, a beautiful garden like Monet, some historical event, the interest in form, and so on. I use art to reflect on things I am interested in. Since I am a sculptor, finding a language to reflect upon those subjects of interest is challenging. Those subjects of interest have changed over the past forty years of my career. I don't think I would like to see them as criticism rather than research and questioning things I experience or hear about. I can't stress one point enough: I, as an artist, need a reason to start working, but it doesn't mean the work has to be read-only in this way. Fine art always needs the active approach of the audience since it can't evoke emotions easily. I always envy musicians for their ability to be able to to do this right away. Too often, artworks are seen as a riddle with only one solution. I always count on the creativity of the audience.

ART MARKET MAGAZINE: Which artists or artistic periods would you say have influenced your work?

WOLFGANG STILLER: When I was a student, it was Francis Bacon and Giacometti. Then also the Arte Povera movement and Joseph Beuys. Especially the Arte Povera with its affinity for materials. Bacon and Giacometti were inspiring in terms of their carelessness about the trends in art in their time. They just followed their own ideas. I am never influenced directly by particular events or daily political issues. Political issues can change quickly and become irrelevant for the next generation or even in the next month. In my opinion, art should focus on timeless subjects which will always be relevant. Who cares about an artwork against Trump in fifty years from now. As I said earlier, I really dislike using art as a propaganda tool, whether left or right.

ART MARKET MAGAZINE: You are using various materials in your work, bronze, massive wood blocks, polyurethane, etc. At which point during the workflow, you decide about the suitable material? Can you describe your workflow from the idea to the final step of the ready artwork?

WOLFGANG STILLER: Well, there are two different approaches I have. In the first case, I have an idea and think which material would be the best to express this idea. Then, I would make several tests with different materials or try to use them in an unorthodox way. I like to use the material in a way the material usually is not connected with, like my wax sculptures which look like frozen objects. We typically associate wax with heat, melting, candles, and so on. Once I am happy with the direction and have decided on a specific material, I execute the work in my studio, or when I choose to do a bronze, I will give it to the bronze foundry. The other approach is dictated by certain materials I find by accident. The material almost demands a specific outcome, and I just have to follow my intuition and create content while working on it.

ART MARKET MAGAZINE: You have started exhibiting your work in the early '80s, which gives you tremendous experience. What is your opinion about the developments and changes in the art market field since you've started your journey?

WOLFGANG STILLER: That's a vast subject and depends on which aspect you want to look at. For sure, it changed massively since I started in the 80s. First of all, the internet made it possible that my works can be seen everywhere in the world, which means the market for my work is not just a domestic one but the entire world. It was hard to find a gallery in the US for me as a German artist back then when you haven't been really successful in your own country yet. Another significant improvement is all the art fairs those days, which also introduce my work to a very international audience which is terrific since many people don't like to buy a work by just seeing a photo. Besides that, social media is a tremendous factor in promoting the work of an artist. Back then, I had to send out pictures of my works to museums and galleries, not being sure if they ended in the trash bin. It was expensive, and the outcome quite vague.
These days one just needs to send a well-done portfolio as a pdf to galleries, museums. It costs nothing to prepare it, but some hours of work on the computer. The internet has been a real game-changer for promoting and selling artworks. I am a sculptor and installation artist. These new digital artworks and NFT don't really attract me. Maybe in the future, who knows...

ART MARKET MAGAZINE: Your work is in the collection of some of the most respectable museums worldwide, including at the Wuhan museum of fine art, China, Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern museum in Germany, Museum Beelden aan Zee, Scheveningen in the Netherland, among others. You have exhibited in countless solo exhibitions around the globe, and you are represented by excellent galleries in the US, London, and Germany. This is an outstanding achievement. From your experience, what advice (or recommended actions) can you share with the young artists who are starting their journey in the art market field?

WOLFGANG STILLER: First of all, I would tell them to just focus on their art and not the business aspect of it. When you are young, you can do jobs on the side to make a living. So many young artists want to become rich and famous right away, which is deadly for their art. I am sure that good quality will be recognized at some point. Too many young people produce just stuff for the art market, which will have absolutely no value in ten or twenty years. So my advice is just to focus on your art. It is essential to document the works in the highest possible quality. Sending out portfolios to museums and galleries, going to openings, and connecting with the collectors and art lovers. These are all important things a young artist has to do. The internet is an excellent tool for research-which gallery might be a good match. There is a fine balance between being too shy and being too pushy as an artist. Just staying in the studio doing only your work is not enough. An artist has to learn to promote the work if the intention is to make a living. Also, the art world is constantly changing, and I am not really paying attention to all this NFT stuff. So things might work differently in the future.

The Scars of Human Evolution by Rogelio Manzo

For Rogelio Manzo, the practice of portraiture is more than a way to capture a likeness. His darkly compelling images of the human figure reflect a blend of cultural influences -as well as an underlying concern with the fragility of life-. In his work, Manzo seeks to reveal the character of his subjects as they are "forced" to be themselves. He goes beneath the body's protective layer of skin, which registers all personal events that scar the human being to reveal their fragility and inevitable mortality. "Through these works, I am exploring the different stages of our lives as human beings," Manzo explains.

“ For me, the skin is not only our protective varnish against harmful exterior forces or the medium with which to be touched and caressed, but it is also where we register all of our personal events that somehow had touched us enough to scars us.”

Manzo studied architecture while simultaneously making an informal study of painting. But he found architecture "too strict." So in the following years, he brought his architectural and drafting skills to play -working in that field to earn a living- until, eventually, he made the welcome discovery that a full-time commitment to his passion for art was, in fact, a viable career choice. Although Manzo has been developing his technique and exploring portraiture for about fifteen years now, he "will never stop exploring portraiture", as he ensures us, he has been working on other subjects and areas that interest him, "I'm a pragmatic artist, I'm always curious of finding new ways in trying to make sense of my reality" he states.

He has experimented with all these materials, eventually hitting on a combination that allows a lightinfused and reflective surface to mitigate the dark imagery. In most of these works, Manzo places the figures in the foreground with rarely a sense of an environment. Thus, the viewer is forced to focus on the Cubistic fragmented visages and figures that are painted with an expressionistic fervor. The surfaces of these oil paintings range from thick impasto to thin washes, with areas of the background is left bare. This treatment adds to the sensation of his subjects being flayed to reveal their innermost feelings; the artist has great freedom to "let the painting develop by itself," he explains. Because of the slow drying of the oil medium, Manzo works on as many as five paintings at the same time.
Currently, the artist is exploring sculpture installations and artobject works, with specialized help on mechatronics and biology engineering; he is using bio-technical instruments and equipment to give life to what could be considered intelligent art installations: micro cameras, sensors, fiber optic lighting, electro-valves, precision air and hydraulics pumps, -and computer programs that act as the brains-, work in unison to conjugate an organic yet artificial conceptual art piece. In these developing works, Manzo is exploring the mystery of organic life and our relationship with it. He uses precision programmable pumps that pulsate out streams of liquids like oils and purified water through flexible tubes visually imitating communication between organs and elements, air pumps to imitate pulsations, recorded sound effects, etc. Then he interprets these apparatuses as complex artificial yet organic lifeforms that remind us of our own fragile organic bodies and of our dependence on organic life.

An EXCLUSIVE interview with Mozart Guerra

Born 1962 in Recife, in the North-East of Brazil, Mozart Guerra studied architecture at the Federal University of Pernambuco, where he graduated as an architect in 1986. At the end of the 1980s, using his knowledge of space and volumes, he produced a large number of sets for theater, carnival, television, and cinema. At the same time, Guerra devoted himself to his passion for sculpture by drawing inspiration from the techniques and materials used in the workshops. He creates works based on polystyrene, resin, foam, materials to which he will remain faithful since.

In 1992, he permanently settled in Paris and devoted himself entirely to sculpture. Inspired by the sculptures of the Colombian Botero and those of Niki de Saint Phalle, he first created works in resin. Busty women in shimmering colors, burlesque characters immersed in extravagant productions, strange animals allowed him to gradually gain artistic and commercial recognition. At the beginning of the 2000s, he gradually evolved his artistic approach: Colorful sculptures, fewer burlesque forms, and a completely new technique. He dresses his sculptures with colored ropes exquisite line-by-line technique, bringing the concept of creation together.

At the same time, he also renews the themes. Heads and bodies of animals, Indians, primates and geishas, portraits, and still life.

At first, sculpted in a very realistic way in polystyrene or expanded foam, they are covered with a sort of second skin: These patiently wound cords, fastened through pins, highlight specific shapes, and blend others. Finally, he covers his characters and all kinds of animal heads – ram, deer, giraffe, bear... presented as hunting trophies – a colorful topography that magnifies them in the manner of a naturalist in his cabinet of curiosities. Mozart Guerra exhibits and sells in galleries and contemporary art fairs in France, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Italy, Benelux, Japan, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Costa Rica, and the USA.

ART MARKET MAGAZINE: Dear Mozart, It's a pleasure having this interview with you! We were very impressed by your unique artistic style - fascinating sculptures made in a sophisticated technique. Let's start from the beginning. You initially worked as a producer for cinema and television, later on graduated from the Federal University of Pernambuco in architecture. What led you to focus on sculpture? How did this artistic journey start? Looking back at your academic years, do you see architecture studies as the base/ leading field to your developed unique style?

MOZART GUERRA: Thank you. It's lovely having this interview in Art Market Magazine. The initial element that influenced my work as a sculptor is inseparable from my Brazilian origins. As you know, I was born in Recife, in the Nordeste region, into a middle-class family with no connection to the artistic field. However, at that time, as children with my friends, we used to make and improvise our own toys, using toned materials, such as cans, strings, cardboard boxes. From that age, I was trained in these manual work exercises. And I loved it!
In addition, I had a passion for drawing at a very young age. Also, the cultures of Brazilian popular art made with simple materials illustrating a playful, mixed, and sometimes irreverent imagination have deeply nourished my achievements. Later on, during my university training in architecture as well as my collaborations as a theater and cinema decorator, I have acquired, in a more professional way, mastery of volumes and structures. But in the end, my deep desire for an artistic activity prevailed over architecture! When I arrived in France, I took artistic drawing lessons at the "Académie de la Grande Chaumière" in Paris. This renowned school, created in 1904, is dedicated to living models. In short, from childhood, the attraction for artistic fields has always been present!

ART MARKET MAGAZINE: Your sculptures are magnificent; the technique is captive; sculptures covered with colored ropes, exquisite line-by-line technique. Where did the idea of creating sculptures covered with ropes come from? What was the primary influence on this kind of sculpture with this particular technique?

MOZART GUERRA: At one point in my career, I felt the need to detach myself from my burlesque and whimsical sculptures to approach more serious subjects that are close to my heart. In terms of artistic influences, my first period of sculpture dedicated to opulent and burlesque characters was undeniably marked by the Colombian sculptor Botero and the French Niki de Saint Phalle. Since the early 2000s, the work of English sculptor David Mach, Venezuelan painter Carlos Cruz-Diez and the American Judith Scott marked me deeply. I reoriented myself towards more realistic sculptures; I also looked for a new dressing resembling a second skin. The rope is, for me, the material offering a comprehensive combination of colors and graphics. This technique makes it possible to achieve a multiplicity of expressions on the same base of the sculpture.

ART MARKET MAGAZINE: Can you describe your workflow step by step? Do you sketch the sculptures before starting the work? What kind of materials are you using?

MOZART GUERRA: All the steps of my creations are totally manual; I do not use any 3D technique. As I decided to use the realistic 1/1 scale, the choices of my characters are determined, especially the animals, by the importance of their volumes. I frequently go to the Natural History Museum to take measurements and make quick sketches. In addition, I do image research on books or the internet.
I absolutely insist on total realism for the base of my sculptures. However, the dressing and composition of the ropes and the accessories will express the messages that I wish to convey.
The drawing is always the preliminary to new work. Then comes the stage of clay modeling and molding to be reproduced in expanding foam. They are then covered with paper before starting the pinned rope cover.

ART MARKET MAGAZINE: Looking at your sculptures in different series, it may be categorized by different cultures influences, the 'Femme de Kyoto' from the 'GEISHAS' series, the 'INDIENS D'AMAZONIE,' the 'PRIMATES,' each series gives a different cultural sensation. Is it some kind of a continuous search? How would you describe the cultural influence on your work? Is it related to your moving from Brazil to France?

MOZART GUERRA: If the subjects of my sculptures mainly represent the excluded or endangered of our societies, subjected to barbarism or human indifference, the representation I give is that of characters or animals facing situations of danger with pride, determination, and derision. In this set, animals occupy a place of choice. I try to bring out their fascinating beauty and great fragility while playing with their deep, ancestral, and sometimes link with man. My Brazilian origins attach me, particularly to the Indians of the Amazon.
Beyond regional representation, these Indians embody a universal subject. My Indian heads take the form of dart-ridden targets, displayed as exotic hunting trophies and wild beasts to illustrate the silent violence of so-called civilizing missions on primitive populations. The geishas of Kyoto particularly impressed me: it is so strange and fascinating to see how exuberance can be the ally of silence in the public space. This paradox inspired me with multiple variations of these enigmatic characters who question the survival of an archaic female condition in Japan.

ART MARKET MAGAZINE: Creating the sculpture and covering it with ropes, line by line, seems like a very long process. Looking at the sculpture closely, it is an immaculate work, with no gaps between the ropes- a perfect cover. I'm amazed by this perfection. How much time does it take to create artwork, from the idea to the final stage?

MOZART GUERRA: You are right! It's a very long process that may reveal my obsessive nature! I make sure that the fixing system with the pins is as invisible as possible. For example, the realization of a geisha head lasts about two months.

ART MARKET MAGAZINE: The sculptures look very massive. What is the weight of the artwork?

MOZART GUERRA: Contrary to their appearance, my sculptures are relatively light. For example, a ram's head weighs about 16 pounds. (7.5 kilograms).

ART MARKET MAGAZINE: Tell us about the development of the recent years. I've noticed you exhibit your work in prestigious galleries worldwide; in recent years, you had solo exhibitions in Japan, China, Brazil, the UAE, The US, and Europe. In which country do you feel your art is most successful in publicity, art collectors, and general interest?

MOZART GUERRA: I would say that my work is more particularly appreciated in Europe, in France of course, where I live, and South America. I had the opportunity to present my work at ART PARIS Fair, the ART ELYSEES fair, the SP ARTE fair, the ARTE RIO fair, the ART BO fair, the ART LIMA fair, and SCOPE BASEL fair in Switzerland, and ART CONTEXT fair in Miami.
I maintain a unique link with Japan by collaborating for ten years with a talented interior designer: Yasumichi Morita, in significant projects in luxury hotels and restaurants like San Regis hotel in Osaka Morimoto restaurants in Doha and Las Vegas. My sculptures and my rope technique in certain decorative elements (monumental chandeliers) were used in these projects. This collaboration has widened the distribution of my works in Asia and the Middle East.

ART MARKET MAGAZINE: What the future holds? Where can we expect to see your art in the upcoming years? Any future exhibitions scheduled in galleries and art fairs?

MOZART GUERRA: I aim to diversify my gallery of animals and characters; seek the acquisition of my sculptures by Museums of Contemporary Art. A new project for this year will be the creation of new animals' bronze sculptures. And above all, continue to take as much pleasure in sculpting! My recent collaboration with the dynamic Chic Evolution In Art Gallery in Fort Lauderdale looks promising. They present seventeen new sculptures and plan to include my work in future fairs participation. In France, my work is permanently exhibited at JPB Art Gallery in Saint Tropez as well as in Luxembourg at Schortgen Gallery.
