Kim Byung Joo
Kim Byung Joo was born in 1979 in Seoul, South Korea. His work exists at the intersection of drawing and sculpture, blending these two disciplines to create architectural forms that defy conventional boundaries. His art strips away the familiar elements of architecture—walls, doors, and windows—resulting in imagined spaces that challenge the viewer's perception of interior and exterior environments.
In Kim's three-dimensional works, structures appear to float, thinly detached from acrylic surfaces. This spatial ambiguity invites the viewer to lose themselves in shifting perspectives, where indoor and outdoor worlds merge, creating endless visual interpretations. His work reimagines traditional architectural concepts, dissolving the distinction between private and public spaces. Rather than focusing on easily recognizable forms, such as homes or typical living spaces, Kim explores the potential of imaginary cities and innovative urban environments. His creations often reflect a vision of organic, repeatable structures that converge within dynamic townscapes.
Kim earned his MFA from the Sculpture Department at Hongik University, South Korea. His work has been featured in numerous group exhibitions, including BIRTH at Yangpyeong Art Museum in 2013. His sculptures are part of the permanent collections at major institutions like the Seoul Museum of Art and the Pohang Museum of Steel Art in South Korea.
